Jönköping Orchestra Association was actually formed as early as 1913 and consisted largely of the music groups at A6 and I12. However, the activity ceased in 1921, due to declining audience numbers.
Musical life in Jönköping dates back to 1634 when an Appeals Court Orchestra was formed. The lawyers, who moved here from Stockholm, brought their cultural habits from the Royal Capital with them, and thus a new level of musical life was introduced to the city at that time.
But in 1928 the Jönköping Concert Association was established and since then Jönköping has had regular orchestral activities. Therefore, 1928 is considered the actual year of establishment.
The initiator of the Jönköping Concert Association in 1928 was music director Enock Nilsson, who was the orchestra's conductor for twenty-five years.
In 1953 he was succeeded by music director Kurt Melin and in 1981 Josef Helperin took over as artistic director and conductor of the Orchestra Association.
When the military orchestras were disbanded in 1971 and succeeded by the Regional Music Orchestra, the regional musicians' service was expanded to include participation in the Orchestra Association's concerts.
In 1988, the Regional Music Orchestra was transferred to the County Music Orchestra.
When the Jönköping Concert Association was formed in 1928, the orchestra consisted of military musicians, civilian professional musicians and amateurs. When Josef left his service in 1994, the professional orchestra was no longer affiliated with the Orchestra Association.
In 1988, the Jönköpings Sinfonietta (Länsmusiken, now part of Smålands Musik och Teater) was formed, consisting solely of professional musicians and with Länsmusiken's chief conductors on the podium.
However, Jönköpings Orchestra Association was "newly created" in 1995, on the initiative of Rolf Johansson, music manager at Södra Vätterbygdens Folk High School and conductor of Immanuel Brass.
Rolf was the orchestra's conductor until the spring of 2000, when he was succeeded by Ove Gotting. Ove worked as a singing teacher at Södra Vätterbygdens Folk High School, a singer and conductor, and was also the leader of the Jönköping Chamber Choir.
From 2020, Yngve Nordström is the conductor, previous musician in Jönköping's sinfonietta.
